Researchers Forum March 2017During the Researchers week, CRC ORE hosted a well-received introduction to mining and introduction to geology course.17 March 2017: Forty-five CRC ORE researchers and staff came together over the course of a week-long CRC ORE Researcher Engagement workshop held in Brisbane in March.

Kicking off the week was a full day ‘Introduction to Mining’ course. Led by consultant Scott Dunham, CRC ORE was pleased that the course attracted many students from our Research Participant base. On the second day, the introductory session turned its focus to geology.

The focal point of the week was the 1.5 day Researchers Forum component. Research Participants from across Australia were given an insiders look into the latest developments in each of CRC ORE’s five research programs:

  • Program 1 – Define
  • Program 2 – Separate
  • Program 3 – Extract
  • Program 4 – Control
  • Program 5 – Operate

The next part of the workshop took attendees through CRC ORE’s Grade Engineering Study Framework. The presenters gave up-to-the-minute overviews of Grade Engineering components, including:

  • Researchers Forum March 2017Natural Deportment
  • Induced Deportment
  • Sensing and Sorting
  • Geometallurgy & Spatial Modelling
  • Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES)
  • Project Evaluation
  • Strategic Mine Planning
  • Conducting Site Trials
  • Researcher Role in GE Site Studies

During the week, CRC ORE organised for special guest speaker, Sue Keay, to give a presentation. Sue is on the Board of CRC ORE and is the Director with responsibility for representing CRC ORE’s Research Participants. CRC ORE organised for Sue to talk about the development of her own career from fledgling geologist to Chief Operating Officer at the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision. Aptly named ‘From rocks to robots’, the group was inspired by Sue’s presentation which outlined her broad career trajectory. They also enjoyed her insights into how other groups are approaching innovation and applied research.

The workshop was attended by representatives from the University of Tasmania (CODES division), the Mineral Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA); Queensland University of Technology, University of Queensland (SMI & JKMRC), CSIRO, Mining3 and CRC ORE.

Researcher Engagement Workshop: September 2016

During September, CRC ORE’s Innovation Delivery Group (IDG) hosted a Research Engagement Workshop at our QCAT offices in Brisbane. The aims of the workshop were to:

  • Foster collaboration between CRC ORE Research Participants;
  • Provide a forum for Grade Engineering® and IES technology exchanges between IDG and Research Participants; and
  • Identify opportunities for increasing collaboration within the CRC ORE consortia.

The workshop was attended by representatives from Curtin University and Curtin’s Western Australia School of Mines (WASM), Queensland University of Technology, University of Adelaide, CSIRO, Mining3 (formerly CRC Mining) and CRC ORE. The first day provided a forum for all parties to showcase their relevant institutions and technical capabilities to the consortia. The day included site tours and demonstrations at CSIRO’s QCAT and CRC Mining’s laboratories.

The second day of the workshop was led by the IDG team focusing on Grade Engineering® and IES. The day comprised four technical sessions covering:
1. CRC ORE’s Grade Engineering® site study methodology.
2. Characterisation, spatial modelling and integrated process simulation approaches.
3. Strategic mine planning, pilot trialing and operationalisation aspects of Grade Engineering.
4. Next generation of Grade Engineering® studies.

The workshop provided a great opportunity for all parties to strengthen existing relationships and continue working towards moving technologies through CRC ORE’s Invent-Integrate-Implement Innovation Pathway.
