Vacation students deliver impressive results

CRC ORE farewelled seven smart and highly motivated university undergraduates on Friday 1 February with a celebratory lunch at the end of a 10-week vacation employment program.

In its second year of operation, the vacation employment program has again provided opportunity for students to work on range of valuable projects relating to CRC ORE’s activities and given them practical experience to add to their credentials for future employment when their studies are complete.

From a range of disciplines including Chemical Engineering, IT, Physics and Economics, few of the students had any previous exposure to the mining industry or considered mining as a possible pathway for future employment.  They have worked with CRC ORE’s Innovation Delivery Group, its Integrated Extraction Simulator team, the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mining Innovation Hub team, The University of Queensland’s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and with IMDEX, a CRC ORE Participant with staff located in the CRC ORE offices.  Students have learnt about some of the most challenging industry issues and been able to contribute their ideas and skills to developing new approaches to solving these in a relatively short space of time.

“Kieran’s help was greatly appreciated over the holiday period. He helped us analyse drill hole data sets using some software packages which were not at all user friendly. He also joined us on a site visit to the South 32 Cannington underground mining operation where he learnt to log blast holes using callipers and gyros. Whilst onsite he had the opportunity to experience how underground mining is done and the kind of equipment used. The students were thrown in the deep end attending a one-day CRC ORE researcher workshop followed by the CRC ORE Annual Assembly and Implementation Council in late November.  The following week they got to work on a range of well scoped projects aimed to deliver real outcomes during the period.

At the end of the program each student presented on the outcome of their work to the broader CRC ORE staff.
